KCIS×YCIS Amazing International Penpalship

Teaching Coordinator Phoebe Chiang

Have you ever had a pen pal before? In recent years when COVID-19 remains serious, it’s hard for people to travel internationally. Therefore, getting a pen pal who lives overseas is a great idea for students who would like to stay international, to equip themselves with international etiquettes, and to make foreign friends. Not surprisingly, there are bunches of this kind of kids in our grade five band.

On the audition day, September 22, 2021, 77 enthusiastic students came to participate. Everyone wanted to build friendship with students from Yew Chung International School of Hong Kong. However, only the most-motivated 25 students were selected into the program.

In this program, students learned about Netiquette and how to protect themselves in the cyber world. They were also introduced to the culture and features of Hong Kong. Yet if they are asked what the best part of this program is, they will definitely say- exchanging emails with their pen pals! In the first email, the students introduced themselves with pictures and their favorites. In the second one, they shared some holiday spirits and also extended their topics from the previous email. In the last email, students wished each other happy Chinese New Year and looked forward to meeting each other in person one day.

The highlight of the International Pen Pal Program fell in the online meeting with pen pals. It was on March 31, 2022. After a short greeting from both schools, all the students started the chat right after they got into their individual chat room, and it seemed like these students had known their pen pals for a long time. Yet, they hadn’t. It was actually their first time meeting online. Many of them even arranged another online meeting after school on that day. This was indeed a precious experience and unforgettable memory for both our students in KCIS and the ones on YCIS in Hong Kong.
Are you also interested in making foreign friends? Are you looking for a way to stay international during the time of the pandemic? Are you open-minded and willing to embrace new opportunities? If you say yes to all the above questions and you are going to be grade 5 next year, don’t forget to sign up for the program this September. You may find yourself an amazing experience and a lifelong friend!
