After a year of ups and downs, summer camp was an opportunity for students to enrich their English in a fun and varied way. As with all the camps, the main thrust of this year’s summer course was to expose students to varied English and the cultures, habits, and pastimes of English speaking nations. With each week having a different focus, and each day investigating it from a different perspective, students were kept engaged and excited about what each new lesson might bring.
Week 1: Sports
In the first week, the topic centered on various sports, starting with the familiar, like basketball, and building on this familiarity to connect it to similar sports. The week ended with some unusual and extreme sports and pastimes such as parkour and free climbing.
Week 2: Music
In week 2, students learned about music, from throat signing to Bollywood, they had the opportunity to find out more about the unusual and unique ways people from other English speaking nations express themselves through song, dance, and with instruments. Students even got a chance to build instruments themselves, and perform in class!
Week 3: Food
Few things are as central to a culture as the food it eats. During week 3 students learned all about the various interesting and unique ways people around the world prepare and eat their food. From aromatic paella on the Iberian Peninsula, to the chocolate of the Aztecs, students used their English to explore the world of food.
Week 4: Fun and Games
Where are you likely to combine activities, music, and food? Well, leisure time of course! In the final week of camp, students learned all about interesting festivals drawn from the various cultures around the world. Ranging from the Windsor Pumpkin Regatta to Flugtag, students got a chance to find out more about how others relax and have fun.
