MyReading is a reading promotion program integrated in English classes for developing knowledge, skills and attitudes students need when meeting the future challenges. When ELA English lessons focuses on four fundamental skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking, MyReading helps students to explore thoughts and broaden the experiences and opinions in their life, thus their English communication and expression are enhanced. Students cultivate their reading habits and become independent readers through MyReading.
To date, our 6th and 5th-grade students become more motivated to read when they can select books based on their own interests and characteristics. With the appropriate reading level, students can build a sense of accomplishment through reading activities. Students shared varied perspectives through reading, and learned different lessons; for example, friends protect each other and work together when coping with difficult situation by reading The Mazer Runner; being kind and compassionate makes us be more satisfied with our lives after reading Percy Jackson; also though Milton Hershey failed twice when opening his own business, he still managed to set up his first successful candy company and used what he earned to help others in need. MyReading becomes one of the frequent topics in students’ school life, and they also recommend books to each other. Peer learning occurs inside and outside the classrooms.
Developing good reading habits in elementary school makes students be able to evaluate their abilities and comprehend the importance of learning and reading in English. We hope that with a solid base in English, our students will flourish on the road to the world and become the social elites on the global stage.
