English Teacher Lana Greeff
Our winter camp was held to help children enrich their language and communication abilities, to learn new skills and engage with other children in their age group. The theme was STEAM. The students have been given exposure to various fields like Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. The students got to experience language learning through sculpting a human heart, building a balloon-powered race car, constructing a paper tower, painting a 3D city- or landscape and solving a mysterious crime by decoding secret clues using ciphers. The students had a blast. There’s something for every child, no matter what interests them. All these enrich their holiday experience while school is out!
Here is our end-of-camp review, highlighting the best moments of all that our students had experienced over the last two weeks.
Day 1: Science
The Circulatory system – Students watched a demonstration of how the heart pumps blood, they measured their heart rates within groups and they took a look into history and learned more about the first human to human heart transplant. Ending the lesson with sculpting a clay human heart.
Day 2: Technology
Students learned about how different technologies and tools are applied to improve inventions. They researched famous inventors and looked at genius or bizarre inventions, determining how useful the invention is and what needs it meets. They also took a deeper look into the history of Formula 1 Racing, discussing the features and parts of a race car and building a balloon powered race car. At the end of the lesson, students used their cars to race against their friends.
Day 3: Engineering
The day of construction! Students learned about the different types of engineers and how they solve problems. They also investigated how to make structures stronger and earthquake proof. The students researched famous structures of the world and looked into the 5 tallest buildings ever built. The lesson was concluded with constructing a tower as tall and stable as possible, using only 3 white A4 papers and tape.
Day 4: 3D Art
Students did research about various famous artists and paintings. They took a deeper look into the different elements of art and the difference between a landscape and cityscape. The students also got to create a 3D artwork of a landscape or cityscape.
Day 5: Mathematics
The winter Camp came to an end with students solving a mysterious crime by decoding secret clues using ciphers.
